Gents Mechanical Pocket Watch

Our Gents Mechanical watches are designed to capture that early Victorian look as portrayed by the gents of that time. The watch itself is a manual wind-up and the workings can be seen from both the front face and back of the watch.

The chain is 12″ in length and has a pocket clip on the end designed to slip on to the cuff of a pocket.

The Celtic design on this watch is typical of designs found on Celtic High Crosses that are associated with Ireland. Designs similar to this design are found on the margins of ancient Kells manuscripts.

Product Code P294 Celtic A The Spiral Design is found on many High crosses in Ireland and on ancient artwork that dates back to Neolithic times as found at Newgrange. Like the Trinity Knot the Spiral design has a variety of meanings for examples life-death-rebirth, mother -father -child and past -present -future.

Product Code: P246 Celtic D design The design on this watch is that of entwined  birds. These long beaked birds could be that of cranes wrapped around each other and twisted through celtic lace pattern. Animals were often used by the monks to depict certain events and represented saints and angels.

Product Code P294 Ireland/Kells The Kells manuscript of the 8^th and 9^th century is probably one of the most famous books of its time. The beautiful art work depicted in the book is full of strange animal like forms. Birds, fish, hounds, lions, oxen and so many more were used by the monks to represent saints and  events.

Product Code: P294 Kells 2 O.F. The design on this watch is taken from the Kells manuscript, possibly the world’s  most famous manuscript. This design depicts two entwined birds, displayed in a beautiful Celtic knot. When the Latin missionary monks brought Christianity to Ireland in early 400 A.D., they also brought a new way of teaching people Bible stories and prayers. As many people could not read, the monks used pictures and symbols in their writings, as can be seen in the Kells manuscript. The birds on this watch look similar to cranes – which symbolize long life, health, happiness, wisdom and good luck.

Product Code: P294 Kells 3 O.F. When the Latin missionary monks brought Christianity to Ireland in early 400 A.D., they also brought a new way of teaching people Bible stories and prayers. As many people could not read, the monks used pictures and symbols in their writings, as can be seen in the Kells manuscript. On this design the image are of dogs or hounds entwined sometimes these images were incorporated into letters in the manuscript.  The hound is a symbol of bravery and courage which is associated with Irish legends – the Hound of Culainn.

Product Code: P294 Kells 4 O.F. The animal depicted on this watch was drawn by the Latin missionary monks when they wrote the Kells manuscript, and similar to most of the animals illustrated, they were drawn from the imagination of the monks. It has been argued that this creature may be a lion, St. Mark’s symbol. The opening line of this gospel is “Tunc crucifixerant Xpi cum eo duos latrones”, (“Then they crucified Christ, and with him two robbers”). Product Code: P294 Kells 5 O.F. This open-face watch boasts a beautiful design of a creature from the Kells manuscript. As the monks could not know exactly what each creature looked like, a lot of the creatures they designed were imagined or taken from interpretation of other stories. This creature arguably looks like a lion – the symbol of St. Mark, one of the four Evangelists. Lions are traditionally a symbol of strength and power.

Product Code: P294 Kells 6 O.F. This open-face watch portrays a Celtic Dragon as taken from the Preliminaries of the Book of Kells.  The Monks who drew up and wrote the Kells Manuscript used many descriptive animals to ornate the many colourful pages.  In some incidences swans, intertwined birds, dragon like creatures and fish shapes were used to shape out capital letters

Product Code P294 Claddagh 1 LG The design is that of the Claddagh taken from the famous love symbol designed in the town of Claddagh, Co. Galway by Richard Joyce back in the year 1689. The design is often used for wedding rings as it is based on the ring that Richard made for his bride to be. The symbolisms are “hands for friendship”, “heart for love” and “crown for loyalty”.

Product Code P294 Harp 1 LG  The harp is another emblem of Ireland, and one of the oldest at that. The Irish harp dates back to centuries long gone, and is used as a representation symbol on many things in Ireland nowadays, the Euro, passports, and the Presidential Seal.

The Celtic designs seen on our products are taken from the Kells manuscripts, the most famous Irish artefact. Celtic symbols and designs have been around for centuries, and were first found on Ogham stones, in manuscripts drawn/written by the monks or in old monasteries around Ireland.

Found in the famous Kells manuscripts, it is believed that one of the many symbols of the Trinity knot is religious – representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is also believed that the Trinity knot is a symbol of three forces of nature; water, fire and earth. In Celtic culture, the number 3 is hugely symbolic.
